French Studies Today

Continuity and Change

Advanced study in French traditionally has focused on the formal and esthetic dimension of literary works. French studies today has come to include interdisciplinary perspectives, drawing upon literary and critical theory, gender studies, art history, psychoanalysis, cultural studies, film studies, linguistics, philosophy, and history. This cross-disciplinary reconfiguration has resulted in research that helps us better understand the place and value of literature, film, and language production as integral parts of broader cultural and historical processes and practices.
