Statement of Interests
Professor Robinson's interests lie in the poetry and culture of 19th-century France. He has worked on the development of science and linguistics during the century and their influence on theories of poetic language and the social role of the poet. His interests in the recent past include the study of music and its relation to poetry, both from a theoretical and a performance point of view. He teaches graduate courses in the School of Music (French art song) and in the Department of French and Italian, where he teaches in particular Romantic poetry, Baudelaire and Mallarmé. Currently he is working on a book-length study of the poetry set to music by French composers of the 19th and 20th centuries.
