Statement of Interests

My research and teaching interests are in modern literature, theater, and critical thought. I have published on the cultural legacies of narrative, feminist theory and narrative, fiction and historical reference, performance and theatricality, and writing and the incommensurable. My current book project is on the crises of common ground confronting literary studies and pervading debates on the aesthetic, ethical, political, social, economic, and historical dimensions of modernity. This project identifies the need to rearticulate literary, artistic, and conceptual practices in terms of thinking through incommensurability, thus foregrounding and theorizing alternative ways of linking in the social bond. A concurrent project treats the symbolic place of childhood in modernity. Recently, I have taught seminars on narrative and cultural memory, theater and modernity, experimental writing and literature out of bounds, and sites of childhood in modernity. I am Editor of L'Esprit Créateur (with Daniel Brewer).
